We initially bought it for Netflow data from our firewall and some internal systems. Currently, we don't use it as we have migrated to Palo Alto Firewalls, which provide much better data and have rendered [SolarWinds] NTA mostly obsolete in our environment. On occasion, we'll use [SolarWinds] NTA to monitor internal traffic to a system, but it's rare.
  • Displaying traffic usage data
  • Internet bandwidth utilization reports
  • Better integration with Palo Alto
  • Better UI for displaying data
[SolarWinds] NTA works if you don't have any other tools, but other tools provide better visibility and are easier to read.
  • [SolarWinds] NTA is useful for Internet speed utilization reporting and planning.
[SolarWinds] NTA is vastly inferior to Palo Alto's built-in monitoring tools. The only benefit [SolarWinds] NTA has over Palo [Alto Networks Next-Generation Firewalls] is historical link utilization and reporting.
[In my opinion,] SolarWinds support is terrible. [In my experience,] it takes them 48-72 hours to respond, and most [of] the time they send you a link to a web article that may or may not resolve your issue.

Our company uses SolarWinds NetFlow Traffic Analyzer (NTA) to monitor our network and to provide historical data for all our VLANs and Internet connections. Whenever we have some kind of abnormal network traffic, such as a bandwidth hog, we can easily find the culprit through the easy-to-use GUI. SolarWinds NetFlow Traffic Analyzer (NTA) is a super helpful tool that should be in every network admin's toolbox.
  • Monitoring data on the network
  • Finding bandwidth hogs
  • Drawing easy-to-read graphs
  • NetFlow support for Cisco Firepower Next-Gen Firewall
SolarWinds NetFlow Traffic Analyzer (NTA) is well suited for any network admin who needs to visualize all the traffic on the network and it allows them to search for historical data. While SolarWinds NetFlow Traffic Analyzer (NTA) is a super powerful tool for most network admins, it may be less suited for beginners or for customers who do not have enterprise-level switches that may or may not support NetFlow.
  • Before we had SolarWinds NetFlow Traffic Analyzer (NTA), we had no way to see where the network traffic was going. Needless to say we had blind spots which we didn't know existed.
  • SolarWinds NetFlow Traffic Analyzer (NTA) has been a very positive tool for our network management.
  • SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor (npm)
SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor (npm) has a stripped-down version of NTA where you can see some data about network traffic; however, if you need to take a deep dive into exactly what is going on, you need SolarWinds NetFlow Traffic Analyzer (NTA). We have also used dashboards from various sources, such as a Meraki Dashboard or a Cisco Firepower Dashboard, and they compare very well to SolarWinds NetFlow Traffic Analyzer (NTA).
Support is amazing at SolarWinds. In the past I have spent hours on the phone with them and they always made sure my issue was resolved to my satisfaction.

SolarWinds NTA has helped tremendously. As we are in the healthcare industry, all of our hardware, software, and others are very important to run with a very limited amount of disruptions. When things go wrong our teams need to see why, when, and how to improve so it does not happen next time. This is where SolarWinds NTA comes in.
  • Monitor interface's network bandwith
  • Traffic patterns
  • Enhance bandwidth before outages occur
  • Bring down the price
  • Tighten up CBQoS
  • Enable Linux equipment
SolarWinds NetFlow Traffic Analyzer is best suited for a company that is very dependent on fewer outages because it costs them a lot while an outage happens. It would not be the best for a small company that doesn't handle high bandwidth needs.
  • Less financial impact because of outages
  • Insight full teams
  • Deep information to help figure out issues
The company I work for now uses:

SAM, VNQM, NCM, npm and DPAIM along with NTA
When I call SolarWinds, we don't always get the best help when it comes to certain issues we may be experiencing.
SolarWinds Network Configuration Manager (NCM), SolarWinds VoIP & Network Quality Manager (VNQM), SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor (npm), SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer

We have been using SolarWinds NetFlow Traffic Analyzer for quite some time at our organization for monitoring bandwidth and traffic patterns.
We use it organization-wide to monitor users or applications with high bandwidth utilization. These helps us to maximize the up-time of our network and applications leading to smooth and fast access to the internet and data center applications.

Our overall experience with this tool is very positive and has helped us a lot in keeping our infrastructure lag free.
  • Monitoring Network Bandwidth is the best feature we see in this tool as its detailed insights help us in allocating bandwidth to users correctly.
  • It can be deployed very easily, efficiently and quickly. We deployed it in a few hours at our organization.
  • It is good at finding Hosts or IP addresses that communicate more or frequently in the network.
  • The dashboard is a little complex for a layman to understand. I remember when I was new to this product I had a difficult time in understanding the traffic patterns.
  • Technical Support Assistance is quite complex and difficult to obtain and it has a lot of room for improvement.
  • Training material is not easy to find. More training videos would be appreciated.
SolarWinds NetFlow Traffic Analyzer is well suited in use cases like:

  1. Bandwidth Monitoring for Internet, MPLS & Point to Point Links.
  2. Realtime performance analysis for networking equipment like switches, routers, firewalls, virtual machines, etc where we can monitor performance of components like CPU, RAM, Storage, etc.
  3. Identifying varied traffic patterns and top talkers in an environment with ease and good accuracy.
  • We have good ROI by optimizing the bandwidth for ISP and MPLS Links.
  • Overall we have seen a positive impact by reducing network down-times.
  • Return on Investment is obtained by identifying healthy and unhealthy network equipment.
SolarWinds NetFlow Traffic Analyzer has more features compared to Wireshark and WhatsUp Gold.
Wireshark provided raw outputs while we were looking for intuitive graphical interface hence SolarWinds was preferred over Wireshark.
And WhatsUp Gold was good at monitoring networking infrastructure but we went ahead with SolarWinds NetFlow Traffic Analyzer for the fact that it can analyse traffic patterns as an addition to all the WhatsUp Gold features.
Obtaining Technical Support assistance for SolarWinds NetFlow Traffic Analyzer is a tedious process and it involves a lot of complexity in raising support tickets.
We have often observed long duration of times required for resolutions of simple support tickets.
Technical Support Staff is knowledgeable and constantly followup regarding the issue but overall experience in support is not very good.

Network Bandwidth Analyzer is our "go-to" tool for basic performance and availability monitoring of our network. It provides us with the ability to quickly and easily see the current status of our network and systems environment, while also making it easy to personalize the presentation of the information so it is accessible and actionable for our different teams. Some of the newer features in NPM and NTA have made Network Bandwidth Analyzer even better in root cause analysis procedures.
  • The level of customization possible with Network Bandwidth Analyzer is very valuable. Rather than being stuck with a "one-size-fits-all" presentation, an administrator can easily create customized views, reports, and alerts so that users can have a more tailored view of the data provided by Network Bandwidth Analyzer. This has the effect of making the tool more attractive to the end user.
  • The NetFlow Traffic Analyzer piece of Network Bandwidth Analyzer provides the details on bandwidth usage on the network. More than knowing how much bandwidth is being used, one is provided with detailed information on how that bandwidth is being used. This provides invaluable information for capacity planning and even certain forensic tasks faced by the network engineer.
  • The ability to produce network maps provides an easy way to create an attractive and functional NOC/SOC view of the entire network. Both technician and the occasional passerby can quickly determine if there are issues to be addressed. The ability to customize a map with background images and custom icons and stencils can make these maps really pop.
  • Network Bandwidth Analyzer needs to provide even more capabilities to restrict individual users in terms of their ability to edit or create web views. Currently, it is an all-or-nothing proposition, which means that any user can change any view rather than being restricted to changing only designated views.
  • Continued improvements in the ability to manage the custom fields used in Network Bandwidth Analyzer is needed. Custom properties are a critical feature in terms of customization of any SolarWinds Orion application, but there is still too much manual intervention and updating required in their management.
  • SolarWinds needs to work on the addition of in-context help in processing the information presented by Network Bandwidth Analyzer. Not all end users are seasoned engineers or systems administrators, so any tools that might tell the user what a "next step" might be when presented with particular types of data or events would be invaluable. SolarWinds has experimented with similar functionality in the past.
Network Bandwidth Analyzer is best as a basic "up/down" tool. It is very good at telling a user the basics that are most often of interest. Information such as availability, CPU and memory usage, bandwidth utilization, response time and hardware health data are available out-of-the-box for a very large vendor list. Also, the dashboards are already configured to show this information.
  • The customizability of Network Bandwidth Analyzer has enabled our engineers to reduce their time to resolution significantly compared to other tools we have used.
  • Recent improvements in the installation/upgrade of Network Bandwidth Analyzer has made the prospect of carrying out such tasks more appealing to the system administrator.
We found Network Bandwidth Analyzer to be superior to other competing applications in price and performance. Ease of operation and customization was also a factor in favor of Network Bandwidth Analyzer. The user community associated with SolarWinds was also a factor in our selection process. The Thwack community is very active and helpful in bringing a SolarWinds instance online and into production.
